Big Black is Back
I am a huge fan of Rob and Big. I think everyone at one point was. People tuned in every week to see what kind of shenanigans these two would be planning on getting into. Rob the skater and sneaky LOADED co-founder of DC clothing living with his best friend and body guard Christopher "Big Black" Boykin. They went three seasons strong providing America with catchphrases (I can't think of anything said during that time that wasn't followed by "Do Work Son") clothing (BB Tees) but then seemingly out of no where, the last season finale also became the series finale. To the public, Big Black was taking time to "be a good dad", his daughter was born and he decided it was time to move into a home of his own with his fiancee and infant child. Privately though was a different story.
Rumors started swirling about the real reason why MTV would let it's cash cow vanish just as quickly as it appeared (Three seasons over the course of 16 months). I mean let's face it, how easy would it be to make it seem as though Big Black still lived at Rob's house, but when tapping was over go back to his own house. Well that happens to be true for the show before it even self-destructed. According to an interview he did with a LA radio station, Big Black wasn't living in Rob's house from Day 1; he lived in a rented home down the street. Black went on to say that Rob's ego became too much for him, claiming that he made all of the success. Other rumors started to appear about Rob's excessive cocaine use and partying ways, canceling taping sessions and demanding them be filmed on his time. All I know is, the two went their separate ways, and TV was never the same.
Black continued on with his clothing line, moving into hats and accessories, Rob started work on Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. The show is now in its own 4th season, but hasn't done nearly as well as Rob and Big. So what does MTV do? They find a way to bring the two back together. And TV couldn't be happier. Big Black made his triumphant return to MTV last night in the season 4 premier episode of Fantasy Factory and it seems as though the two men picked up right where they left off. Either they are friends again, or the money is right enough to put on the act, either way I can only hope for good things.
